Shopify Store Setup Checklist for US Businesses (2026)

Business owner setting up a Shopify online store on a laptop

Shopify makes it easy to open an online store, but a store that actually sells in the USA needs more than a theme and a few products. Payments, sales tax, shipping rates, legal pages, SEO and speed all have to be set up correctly before you launch.

This Shopify store setup checklist covers everything a US business needs, in the right order. Follow it step by step, or hand it to your developer to make sure nothing is missed.

Before You Start: Plan Your Shopify Store

  • Choose your plan. Shopify’s Basic plan starts at about $29–$39 per month depending on annual or monthly billing, with Grow and Advanced plans for larger stores. Check current pricing on Shopify’s site before you commit.
  • Pick your domain name. Short, easy to spell and ideally a .com.
  • Prepare product data. Titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, weights, variants and high-quality photos.
  • Know your margins. Include product cost, payment fees, shipping, packaging and apps.

Step 1: Store Settings and Branding

  1. Add your store name, business address and contact email in Settings > Store details. Use a professional email on your own domain, not a free Gmail address.
  2. Set the store currency to USD and the correct time zone.
  3. Upload your logo and favicon.
  4. Connect your custom domain and make it the primary domain.
  5. Confirm the free SSL certificate is active (https).

Step 2: Choose and Customize a Fast Theme

Your theme controls design and a big part of your store speed. Start with a well-supported Online Store 2.0 theme, such as Dawn or a premium theme from the Shopify Theme Store. Then:

  • Customize colors and fonts to match your brand.
  • Build a clear homepage: hero banner, best sellers, collections, reviews and trust badges.
  • Keep the navigation simple with your main collections at the top.
  • Test every page on mobile, where most US shoppers buy.

Step 3: Add Products and Collections

  • Write unique product descriptions. Avoid copying manufacturer text.
  • Use clear product titles that include what customers search for.
  • Upload multiple photos per product, compressed and with descriptive alt text.
  • Set up variants (size, color) with SKUs and inventory tracking.
  • Enter accurate product weights so shipping rates calculate correctly.
  • Group products into collections by category, use case or season.

Step 4: Set Up Payments

  • Activate Shopify Payments to accept major credit cards with no extra transaction fee from Shopify.
  • Enable express checkouts like Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal to reduce cart abandonment.
  • Consider buy now, pay later options for higher-priced products.
  • Add your bank account and verify your business details for payouts.
  • Turn on fraud analysis and review high-risk orders before shipping.

Step 5: Configure US Sales Tax

Sales tax in the USA is set at the state level, and rules differ by state. Shopify can calculate tax automatically, but you must tell it where you are registered.

  • Go to Settings > Taxes and duties and add the states where you collect sales tax.
  • Understand economic nexus: many states require you to collect tax once your sales into that state pass a certain threshold.
  • Set product tax categories for items that are taxed differently, like clothing in some states.
  • Talk to a US tax professional to confirm your obligations. This guide is not tax advice.

Step 6: Set Up Shipping

  • Create shipping zones for the continental USA, Alaska and Hawaii, and international if needed.
  • Choose flat rates, free shipping over a minimum order, or calculated carrier rates.
  • Use Shopify Shipping to buy discounted USPS, UPS or DHL labels.
  • Add package sizes so calculated rates are accurate.
  • Show estimated delivery times on product and cart pages.

Step 7: Add Legal and Policy Pages

US shoppers expect clear policies, and payment providers often require them. Add and link in your footer:

  • Refund and return policy
  • Shipping policy
  • Privacy policy (including state privacy laws such as California’s CCPA if they apply)
  • Terms of service
  • Contact page with email, phone and business address

Step 8: Shopify SEO Setup

  • Edit the SEO title and meta description for your homepage, collections and products.
  • Use clean, keyword-friendly URL handles.
  • Add alt text to every image.
  • Write collection descriptions that help shoppers and search engines.
  • Submit your sitemap (yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) in Google Search Console.
  • Start a blog to target buying-guide keywords.

Our on-page SEO checklist explains each of these in more detail.

Step 9: Apps, Speed and Tracking

  • Install only the apps you need. Every app can add scripts that slow your store.
  • Add a product reviews app to build trust.
  • Set up email marketing with abandoned cart flows.
  • Connect Google Analytics 4, Google Merchant Center and the Meta pixel.
  • Test speed with PageSpeed Insights and fix large images and unused apps.

Step 10: Final Launch Checklist

  • Place a real test order and refund it.
  • Check order confirmation and shipping emails.
  • Test discount codes and gift cards.
  • Review every page on mobile and desktop.
  • Remove the store password and launch.
